About the Artist
|
Her art and fountain designs are inspired by her love of nature and by her travels in Europe. "The art and the fountains in England, France and Italy capture a timeless elegance that just stirs the heart... so much of the art and sculpture in Europe is, well, absolutely delicious!..." In the 1970s, at Portland State University, Dana discovered a love for composition and design through photography. From there her interests expanded to encompass studies in interior design, including Sacred Space and Feng Shui. Finding herself constantly drawn to stone, water, metals, and other natural elements, she often combines them with watercolor and acrylic paints to create beautiful interpretations of the natural world. "I love to use natural stone and slate in my art pieces, it lends such a timeless strength." Dana has adapted her own unique mixed media style which infuses her work with a gentle harmony and a serene sense of balance. Dana's fountain designs are as much a reflection of her unique spirit as is her art. "Fountains are wonderful to work with. To me, the water in a fountain represents life, and it should spring forth like it does in nature." She is dedicated staying true to the properties of water in the natural world. "I see a lot of indoor fountains in America where the water is dripping down morosely over metal, and the water on metal sounds hollow. Water in nature flows over rock, not metal. The sound of water on rock is beautiful. It has a high, twinkling melodic sound that is just joyful." Dana often uses slabs of marble in her fountains, which she carefully works with stonecarving tools to create natural balance in shape and size.
